Muslim Women's Association

MORE THAN 40 YEARS OF DEDICATION AND SERVICE

Please allow me to tell you a bit about the Muslim Women’s Association:

  • The Muslim Women’s Association is a non-profit, non-political organization established in 1960, in Washington DC. Its main goal is sharing the Muslim world’s cultures and traditions with the American community.

  • To achieve this goal it holds monthly meetings, frequently at different Muslim Embassies in Washington, DC; organizes visits to museums that exhibit art collections from the Muslim world; and holds a yearly Bazaar at which typical handicrafts and foods are sold.

  • During the holy month of Ramadan it organizes an Iftar, the fast breaking meal at sunset. The meal is usually shared among family and friends and often includes people from different faiths in addition to Muslims.

  • The Muslim Women’s Association’s main sources of income include membership dues, monies collected from those attending monthly events, and proceeds from the yearly Bazaar. Corporate donations are always welcome. Donors should be aware that all monies raised are spent within the United States or sent to other parts of the world by US organizations.

  • With the monies raised, the Muslim Women’s Association provides scholarships to young Muslim women, allowing them to continue their education in the US. Such scholarships have been provided since 1985. In addition the MWA provides occasional disaster relief to the victims of natural and/or human disasters in different parts of the world.

  • Since its founding in 1960, the President of the Muslim Women’s Association has always been the spouse of an Islamic country’s Ambassador.

It is the hope of the Muslim Women’s Association that through its mission and activities it can succeed in building bridges of friendship, knowledge, and better understanding between the Muslim World and the American people.
